Wall of Excellence

We are excited to announce that this year Glen Burston and Michelle Darvill will be inducted into the Western Rowing Wall of Excellence.

Glen rowed for Western in the early 90's with a formidable light men's crew.  Dubbed the Eleven Crew, they raced to wins at Dad Vails in the light men's 8+.  Graduating with a Masters in Mechanical Engineering he began contributing his expertise as an alum.  Glen was one of the first presidents of the Mustang Old Oars Club and is the majority owner of Hudson Boat Works overseeing the growth of the company with his former crew mates, Jon and Craig.  Glen and Hudson contribute to the rowing community as a whole with initiatives that include support for EDI and community growth initiatives.  Most recently, Glen was instrumental in launching the Rowing Industry Trade Association which advocates for issues surrounding our sport and manufacturing worldwide.

Michelle coached within the Western Rowing program during the early 90's and again through the early 2000's while rowing and then coaching on the Canadian National Rowing Team.  Michelle is a 3x World Champion for both Canada and Germany and competed at the 1996 Olympic Games.  She also coached several medal winning crews at the U23 World Championships including a World Fastest Time in 2011. Michelle was awarded the FISA Coach of the Year in 2021 and coached several crews to Olympic Gold including the Canadian Women's 8+ in 2021 and three Dutch crews in 2024.  Michelle was a mentor for many Western rowers and continues to be a mentor to coaches domestically.

It is our honour to induct Glen and Michelle into the Western Rowing Wall of Excellence. A big thanks to the Wall of Excellence Selection Committee of Angie Schneider, Mike Murphy, Lindsay Marrifield, Daniel Bechard and Heather Cartwright for continuing to recognize the contributions of these great individuals.
